Over the holiday weekend, a 14-month-old baby from Corozal District died after he was knocked down by a driver.

Police reports say that Baby Johan Enns, a resident of Little Belize, was in an open lot in the village when 17-year-old Gabino Nah arrived in a Ford Van.

Nah, a resident of Chunox village, conducted the business that he was supposed to with the lot owner. It appears that he did not realize that the baby was playing in front of the van. When he attempted to move off, the van ran over the baby and killed him on the spot.

Here's more from the head of the National Criminal Investigations Branch:

ACP Joseph Myvett

"Sometime around 11:50am Corozal Police were called to Camp Thirty-nine in Little Belize where they observed the lifeless body of a child and it was reported to them that one Gabino Nah had arrived at a warehouse at Little Belize where he alighted the van and was having a conversation with the owner of the warehouse. He later got back into the van and move in a forward motion where he ran over fourteen-month-old Johan Ends who apparently died on the spot. An investigation was carried out where Mr. Nah was detained and later served with a notice of intended prosecution whilst statements were recorded and we are awaiting the post-mortem results before that information is then forwarded to the D.P.P. in order for her to decide."

"Sir, I know this seems like an accident in the purest form, because you know sometimes you reversing and you can't see."

ACP Joseph Myvett
"He was moving forward."

Jules Vasquez
"Was there any possibility that alcohol was involved?"

ACP Joseph Myvett
"Not at this point. We do not have that information. I believe the procedure was followed where samples were taken from him in that regard."

As you heard, the driver of the vehicle has been served with a notice of intended prosecution.
