About 3 weeks ago, we told you about the traffic accident in Unitedville, Cayo, which claimed the life of 92-year-old Daniel Gongora. Tonight, John August, the UDP standard-bearer who lost the General Elections in Cayo Northeast, is out on bail, after he was arraigned in Magistrate's Court for this accident.

Police have arrested and charged him with the offenses of manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, and driving without due care and attention. He was released on bail of $4000. He must return to Magistrate's Court on14 April for an adjournment in this case.

Around 11:15 a.m. on November 30th, 2020, the elderly Daniel Gongora was attempting to cross the highway in Unitedville Village and August was approaching in his Isuzu D-max. He says that when he saw Gongora, he stepped on the brakes and tried to swerve to avoid the accident. He still ended up hitting Gongora with the right front side of the vehicle. Gongora was knocked unconscious, and he injured his hand. He was transported to the Belmopan hospital, and died a few days later.

August is a well-known politician in Cayo, he ran twice in the Cayo Northeast constituency, and is a former 3-term Mayor of the twin towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena.
