In August it made headlines when police intercepted a government pickup, allegedly smuggling over 7 pounds of weed. Three immigration staffers were Inside the Department pickup when they were stopped at a police checkpoint on the Phillip Goldson Highway. One was a driver for the Immigration Department and the other two were Immigration Officers. The men were charged with drug trafficking.
It was a sensational case, because it showed lawmen allegedly using the cover of their office and government vehicle to traffic marijuana from the north.
But, today in Orange Walk Magistrate's Court, it all fell apart. That's because their attorney pointed out to the magistrate that the weed was in a filing cabinet in the pan of a government pickup which various people use. With that, it could not be established that any of the men inside the truck had any specific knowledge or ownership of the marijuana. With that, their attorney filed a no case submission which was upheld by the magistrate and the case was thrown out.
