Keeping it in Corozal, this weekend, the cops found 2 dangerous assault rifles that were stashed inside a car believed to have been stolen in Mexico and transported to Belize. Several weeks ago, police found this grey Volkswagen Jetta abandoned on a feeder road just outside Corozal Town. They were finally able to gain entrance to the vehicle last Friday, and that's when they found two AK-47 rifles inside. Here's what the Head of the National Criminal Investigations Branch had to say about this discovery:

ACP Joseph Myvette - Head, NCIB
"On Friday last, sometime around 4:30 p.m. officers, with the assistance of a locksmith, conducted a search on a gray in color Volkswagen Jetta car that is in police custody."

"This car was found several weeks ago in a bushy area off a feeder road in the Corozal District. When checks were made through INTERPOL, it revealed that this vehicle was stolen in Mexico. This along with another vehicle was then transported to the Police Training Academy, where they were kept, pending the outcome of that investigation. On Friday, with the assistance of the locksmith, the vehicle was opened. It revealed a blue bag containing two AK-47 rifles and a package of marijuana weighing some 970 grams. Those items were retrieved and deposited as found property. There was no indication that this vehicle had any owner in Belize."

At this time, the cops have 2 theories about this vehicle. The first is that there would have an attempt to get documentation to legalize ownership of this vehicle in Belize to cover the fact that it was stolen across the border. Another possibility is that it would have been stripped for parts.
