Today's celebrations gave the press the opportunity to ask the BDF Commander about 2 far less pleasant topics.
The first is an allegation that a patrol of soldiers, stationed at the Cadenas Observation Post, committed sexual misconduct against a group of Honduran women. They were part of that caravan of Honduran migrants who were trying to push their way through Central America in the hopes of arriving in the US. As we reported, that caravan of several thousand travellers was fleeing all the hardships that have hit their country.
This morning, the BDF General briefly discussed the allegation and the internal investigation that was triggered:
Brig. Gen. Steven Ortega - Commander, BDF
"We've heard the allegation. We haven't received a formal report as yet. So, we cannot do anything about that until we receive a formal report. But, we did conduct an internal investigation into the conduct of that patrol, and personnel will get disciplined for the conduct of that patrol."
Reporter
"What exactly was so offensive in terms of their conduct, sir, if you're able to disclose?"
Brig. Gen. Steven Ortega
"Basically, they didn't follow some of the procedures that are laid, which they didn't follow through."
