A police officer was shot in the leg in Machakilha this afternoon but the shooter is still on the run. 22-year-old Ronaldo Camara, attached to the Special Patrol Unit, was a part of a team of 25 BDF soldiers and 2 police officers who were heading to the Machakilha outpost when he fell behind after stopping for some water at a nearby river.

According to his statement, he realized his team had gone ahead of him and couldn't catch up with them. That's when he encountered two Hispanic men, one of whom was armed with a 9mm pistol and the other with what looked like a homemade shotgun. The latter pulled out his weapon and fired a single shot, which caught him in the left calf. Camara returned fire and the two men managed to escape.

His fellow officer, 28-year-old David Jones noticed he was missing so he and the commander of the BDF backtracked to San Jose Village, but they still did not find him.

They then went down another route and, around 11am, Jones fired three warning shots. Right after, he heard 8 shots being fired. He followed the direction of the sound and found Camara nursing the wound. They took him to San Jose Village and then to the Punta Gorda Hospital where he received treatment.
