And the Minister also reminded business owners and promoters that they can be charged for hosting social events. And no – not a $500 ticket, they will be taken to court if they are caught. And the ministry is looking to employ JP's to ensure things don't get out of hand at those establishments that are supposed to be restaurants but act more like nightclubs.
Hon. Kareem Musa - Minister of Home Affairs
"You're perfectly right in naming Hi5 because we have gotten videos from that particular establishment about 3 weeks, I haven't gotten any report since but again that is one of those establishments we are keeping a very close eye and again you don't want to be charged because this is not a 500 dollar ticket you know, it is actually a charge for hosting a social event which carries a maximum of 5,000 dollars, so this is not the normal face mask wearing or the social distancing ticket offense, this is actually a charge, so you will be detained by police and you will be taken before the magistrate. I'm reminding all owners of these establishment that you have follow the law strictly and you have to ensure that your patrons and your guest are also following the law."
Even a civilian cannot host a social gathering at their home – meaning baby showers, birthday parties, or simply having friends over for a beer. While guests are allowed, they cannot be invited. The Minister also clarified that while graduations are allowed with permits, graduation parties are forbidden.
