And while it is unclear if Kwame's killer was a gang member, police are apparently babysitting the gangs in the city. That's because officers have been seen outside known gang members' homes. The ComPol explained that while this was a practice in the past, the eastern division commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police Richard Rosado, has reinstated it. Williams said he will wait and see how things play out.
Chester Williams - Commissioner of Police
"I had earlier on in 2019 after I became commissioner, had removed those officers from those gang ridden areas and I had the same view that in some cases these gang members because they know police is stationed in front of their home or in their area, they go and commit crime outside and they come back and hide right there knowing that their rivals would not come there because police is there and so that was the view I had and so I removed those officers but quickly we saw that the crime rate was going up in Belize City, we saw that shootings and murders were increasing and so the new OC who is in Belize City, Mr Rosado, he saw the need to go back to doing that with a view to minimize these shootings and minimize the murders, it is his area of responsibility and I have tasked him as the commander to ensure that he do his best to reduce crime and If that is his strategy to reduce crime then I'm not going to interrupt because if crime goes out of control, it's him I'm going after so I try not to interfere with what he do with a view to ensure that crime and violence is reduced in Belize City."
