A former Guatemalan Kaibil wanted for his involvement in a 1982 massacre in that country was found in Belize last week and expelled today. Minister of Immigration, Eamon Courtenay, today signed an Expulsion Order directing that 68 year old Alfonso Bulux Vicente be detained and deported from Belize.
The Hope Creek resident - who's been here for decades but did not have permanent status is wanted in Guatemala in connection with an incident that occurred in December 1982 in the village of Dos Eres, where 200 villagers were massacred at the hands of the Guatemalan Kaibiles.
He was found after he applied to the Ministry of Immigration for permanent residence, and in August 2021, the ministry requested a security clearance - which is when an INTERPOL Red Notice was discovered. Guatemalan law enforcement confirmed to the Belize Police Department that Bulux Vicente was wanted for murder. Bulux Vicente was detained by the police last week and then taken t the Belize - Guatemala border and handed over to Guatemalan authorities.
But, his attorney - who was retained by his family this morning - says his client was abducted by the state and denied due process:
The Expulsion Order bars Bulux Vicente from ever entering Belize again. He reportedly owned a business in Hope Creek.
