A cop was shot this evening in Orange Walk - and the bullett was fired by another police officer. We understand the injury is not fatal but we know it happened at a police checkpoint near the Otro Benque Road and reports suggest it was no accident.
The Commissioner of Police has confirmed that police had to shoot one of their own in Orange Walk today. And here's why. The police officer who was driving this JAC pickup had been involved in an accident in Corozal Town. But when the lady he'd had the accident with approached his vehicle, he refused to come out. And, the Compol says he then sped off without cooperating with the police. They pursued him and ask their counterparts in Orange Walk to set up a checkpoint since he was southbound.
The Police at that checkpoint saw the vehicle approaching and attempted to stop it - but the police officer behind the wheel opened fire on the checkpoint. The cops there avoided injury, but caught him with one shot to the body which collapsed his lung. He was taken to the northern regional hospital is in a stable condition. Notably, while fleeing from Corozal police and on his way to the Orange Walk area - he also ran into a prison van. Police are searching his pickup right now to try to find out why he was fleeing.
