And while cops in the north continue to investigate the death of Daniel Rios, officers in the Cayo District are trying to determine the identity of a man whose decomposed remains were found in the Belize River near the Spanish Lookout community.
At around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, police responded to reports that a body was found floating in the Belize River. When they arrived, they found the remains of a shirtless man, who was dressed in shorts and a pair of maroon tennis shoes.
The police spokesperson briefly discussed the case with the press this morning:
ASP Fitzroy Yearwood - Communications Officer
"I know that this person was found in a decomposed state, sometime around 3:30 on Saturday. He was removed from the river in the Spanish local community, and it is a clear complexion male person."
"He was face-down of course, and, it looks like he got caught in some bamboo that were in the river."
"So far, investigators have said that he appeared to have a broken neck. We were unable to identify him. So he's listed as John Doe, and we have him at the Medical College Lab, where an examination is expected to be conducted. Hopefully, when we put out the description of this person, maybe relatives will realize that we haven't heard from him for a while, and could assist us in identifying who we have now as John Doe at the morgue."
