28-year-old Brian Castillo was formally arrested and charged with two counts of murder today. Castillo was captured in Guatemala yesterday evening and handed over to Belizean authorities last night. He appeared in the Belmopan's Magistrate court this afternoon where he was remanded to prison.
Castillo is accused of fatally stabbing his common-law wife, 33-year-old Jennifer Archila, and her daughter, 12-year-old Nitzia Catzim on Sunday night.
He then took his son, 7-year-old Darwin Castillo, and fled the scene, heading for the Guatemalan border. Hours before he was captured, his son was found and returned to his mother, who resides in Melchor.
When the authorities caught up with Castillo, he told them that he and Archila were drinking and she threatened his son with a knife. He admitted that he killed Archila and Catzim but claims that he was doing "what he had to do" to protect his son.
