http://www.7newsbelize.com/images/21/.jpg So, tonight the Police Department is at a curious juncture - celebrating another one thousand plus pound drug bust in 4 weeks - accompanied by a key set of arrests - and, again, a lawman is included in the mix.
As it stands tonight, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams can proclaim without challenge his long time boast that he is the commissioner who has overseen the greatest number of narco plane busts with the greatest yields of illegal drugs and certainly a record number of arrests for a month.
But, the police have also unearthed what appears to be a deeply rooted ring of corrupt cops. In the past 11 months - a total of 8 lawmen, including 7 police officers have been charged for alleged involvement with the landing of drug planes. This - in addition to the fact that the third in command of the Department, Assistant Commissioner Marco Vidal is now being recommended for suspension because four members of his team are included in those who have been charged.
If you're an optimist who sees the glass as half full this is a good thing - since an alleged corrupt ring is being rooted out - but if you're a realist - you would be forced to conclude that this is just the tip of an iceberg that may extend to 20,000 leagues under the sea.
We'll be sure to ask the Commissioner about it when he hosts a press briefing tomorrow.
