Last week, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams told the media he was doing his best to reduce the number of fatal accidents on the highways.

His solution? Making each jurisdiction responsible for policing their own highways.

But it may not be as simple as all that because fatal traffic accidents have been on an increase recently. And this weekend another man lost his life when he collided into the back of a Bluebird bus. Here's more from the police communications officer:

ASP FitzRoy Yearwood, Communications Officer

"Received information of an RTA at mile 1 on the Southern highway, when police arrived at the scene sometime around 3:10PM. the driver of a Toyota Hilux was trapped behind the steering wheel. His name was learned to be Micheal Lindo and police investigation revealed that a bus, a Bluebird bus was traveling in front of him and upon the bus approaching the area where we have those, they call it grated area but I call it a speed bump because it's designed to slow down traffic. The Hilux slammed into the back of the bus and it was extensively damaged because the driver was trapped it took a while to get him out. By that time he was motionless. He was transported to the Southern Regional where he was pronounced dead. We know that the driver of the bus was served with a NIP and investigators are still trying to put together the pieces. It was rather early in the evening when this accident occurred."

"The condition of the driver of the pickup was the only thing reported to me. They are telling me that the back bumper of the bus was damaged and the back door and so from the looks of things it would be that the pickup that slammed into the bus received most of the damages, no."

Police are urging drivers to slow down and take more care on the roads, especially during the holiday season.
