Today a police patrol in the Blue Creek area intercepted a cargo of unlicensed contraband veterinary supplies for the cattle industry. This had apparently been smuggled through the La Union crossing - as part of an ongoing trade in these products - to which it seems the authorities are instructed to blithely look the other way.

That instruction - best information says - comes from the political directorate which has heavily backed the mennonite cattle producers and their trade.

But, it seems police never got the memo - and after the contraband had passed through the customs checkpoint with no problem - the cops stopped it, realized it did not have the approved paperwork for BAHA, and sent it back to customs.

Tonight - thanks to that intervention - the products are in the customs impound. But what isn't is the Dodge Ram pickup that it was being smuggled in. Reports tell us that based on a politician's request that has been cleared from impound and returned to the owner.

We'll keep following this case to see if fines are levied for the unauthorized imports.
