We all know how big a problem contraband is - and we regularly show busts on the news - but, what makes it worse is where there is complicity from law enforcement - who use their security clearance as impunity to smuggle at will.
Well, apparently one of them has been caught in the act of smuggling - and he did it in broad daylight.
A video posted to TikTok last night appears to capture a police officer in the act of smuggling contraband beer. The video with a Spanish caption translating to "how when the police say 'don't contraband'" shows the border crossing at Arenal. A man in a camouflage uniform and boots - the same types worn by the Special Patrol Unit is seen lugging cases of beer up a path in the village - which famously spans the Belize-Guatemala border in the Cayo District.
We sent the low resolution video to the commissioner of police along with a frame by frame breakdown of the image so he could identify the cop that's allegedly pictured.
Here's what he told us about it in a voice note:
Voice of: Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I have viewed the images you sent along with the video footage and we believe we know who the particular officer is in question and the matter has been referred to the Professional Standard Branch for a full investigation"
We'll keep following up on the case to see what police eventually confirm. As for the CASES, many people on Facebook wanted to know which precinct is having the Corona sale.
