A 28-year-old woman is detained tonight after attempting to apply for a Social Security Card with a fraudulent birth certificate.

That incident was reported to police at around 3:45 on August 10th when the woman, a resident of Banak street, visited the Social Security office to apply for a social security card. She was then asked for her documents where she presented a valid Belizean passport and a Belizean birth certificate and spoke Spanish. When Ms Lopez was questioned; however, some of her responses were inconsistent with what was on the birth certificate.

That red flag raised enough suspicions to prompt a trace of the alleged fraudulent birth certificate to the Vital Stats Unit but it was found to be unavailable. It was also learnt that the registrar who allegedly signed the birth paper was no longer an employee at the VSU when it was issued.

And with all that information in hand, the SSB branch manager at that location may have felt he had no choice but to call the police. The alleged fraudster has since been detained, and the birth certificate was retrieved and kept as an exhibit.
