And while those are the police details of the case - for those who were out at Soca Moca's Mas Camp for a night of revelry and release, it got real scary real quick - with everyone dashing, driving and running out of there as fast as they could.
Yes, Soca Moca's base is in what's considered gang turf - but the violence had nothing to do with their Mas Camp activities. One of the bands founders expressed her deep pain at having the Carnival spirit stained by the sounds of shots fired - here's what it sounded like in that moment - and her reflection on it today:
Marcia Smith, Supporter, Soca Moca Mas Band

"I will be real Soca Moca, one of the number one bands in the land. A lot of people love the band, a lot of people don't like the band but it's the number one band and last night was a surprise to us because that has never happened to Soca Moca yet. It doesn't matter where they practiced or where they changed their position, it never happened yet."
"It was a splendiferous and massive crowd, out there was beautiful, the girls were beautiful, everybody was ready last night and I don't know how to express that last night but I loved it. We sat on the step and everybody was in their area, you know in their corner and when we heard a gunshot but the same time they just had told us that the media and the judges were coming so we wanted to know as they got there why somebody would do that to us, we were the last band to come and visit last night. And that really shocked a lot of people even my niece, Audrey, I felt sorry for her. Suzzette all of them that work hard there, I felt sorry for them because you know what ma'am I think it's wrong what they did. I don't know who did it and I wasn't there to see who did it, I was on the step, everybody ran and got frightened that's all I can really say but I think the guys they need to respect this time of the year because this is once a year, two years we have no Carnival, no nothing, we just do our duty as I said but no carnival but we do our own thing in our yard because we loved it and everybody does love the time of the year, September celebrations is once a year and mammy like I said the guys them out there north, south, east, west all of them need to put down the gun and leave us the Carnival people alone alongside the people on the outside because there are kids out there, we have people with young kids in their hands, it saddens… you see cold seed on me. It was so sad last night that I nearly dropped my tears but I sat down and started to rail up for a minute cuss up but said let me go home because I didn't like what happened."
