In our Zoom session with the commissioner today, we also asked about Mary Beth Wade, who carries the notorious nom de plume, "Sweet Syrup."
She's the former partner or Winston Tanga James, the gang figure who was killed inside his vehicle as she was riding shotgun. That put her in the middle of a deadly gang beef - and also pointed to the possibility that she could have been the one who set it all up.
Wade is now reportedly in the USA seeking asylum after death threats were made against her following the murder of of Winston Tanga James.
But, was she ever really a suspect? The press asked the Compol about that today:

"Was or is Marybeth ever a suspect in the Tanga murder?"
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

"We have idea as to who the suspect or suspects are in respect to Tanga's murder. I guess by now the entire Belize and populist have heard a voice clip that was going around with a particular gang leader and Marybeth. It is assumed that they are the 2 persons in that voice clip and certain information was shared. We are looking at those information that was shared to see if we can confirm the information there in."
Reporter
"Is Marybeth wanted or just a person of interest at this time?"
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"Just a person of interest."
Jules Vasquez
"Sir, but is there a reason she was never detained right after the murder, because I remember she had called our media at the time and she was at the police station and said that I am here and they want to detain me, etc. But she was never detained. Is there a reason why?"
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"She was actually detained and she was questioned as well."
Wade's status in the USA is currently unknown after a woman she referred to as her aunt pulled out of the role as her sponsor last month.
