In other news, the GI-3 is being accused of killing a family dog tonight while pursuing a suspect.

It happened at just about 11:00 this morning when the dog's owner claims that the Gi3 dashed through her yard. They were supposedly in pursuit of an armed criminal but came into the path of the family's tied guard dog, Junior the pitbull, who is said to have bit one of the officers.

That offending byte was punished with a shot to the head which killed the dog instantly and left the family aghast.

Tonight we'll hear from Junior's owner, a woman mourning her dog and grappling with how to explain his death to her school-aged children.

This empty dog house is all that remains of Junior, a family dog from Mahogany street who was killed this morning when police barged into the yard the canine was charged with protecting - and shot and killed the dog which was tied up.

Desralee Logan, Cops Killed Her Dog
"So this morning at about 10 minutes to 11:00 we heard a barrage of shots. When we looked through our window we realized that it was in our yard at our dog. The police fired approximately 6 shots at our dog and we have the casings to prove it. I have pictures of everything and then after killing the dog they storm into the house and were talking about someone ran through our yard."

Logan says the hardest part about Junior's death will be facing her children when they get home from school today and having to explain why their dog wasn't there excitedly wagging his tail to greet them.

"Everything, my kids grew up with their dog that dog is their everything so how can I explain to them now when they come home where their dog is as they walk into the yard he is the first thing they see. It's ridiculous these police need to learn a better PR of knowing how to deal with people you know."

"First thing if. Someone had run through our yard our dog would be barking, right. Ok, so then we allowed them inside, they came inside now. After they said they came looking for guns and ammunition in my house, you told me somebody ran through my yard. If somebody ran through my yard, he said someone threw the gun into my room. I have bars on my house, how would somebody throw their gun. You see what I'm saying and then they came and. They were talking and belittling us calling us ASSHOLE and stupid and very unprofessional, you know. I told them I want to get my phone to record and police literally ran behind me not wanting me to get my phone in my own house. You know, they took away all my rights in my own home and then they told us they were sorry about our dog you know it's unfair."

And Logan may find an unlikely ally in the Minister of Home Affairs who just last week told 7News cameras that cruelty to animals is an offence.

Kareem Musa, Minister Of Home Affairs

"There is a provision in the criminal code. It is an offence for you to be cruel to animals. It is an offense that you can be charged for and there are penalties for it. It's just unfortunate that in many instances people feel as though posting it on Facebook that is enough. You need to actually go into the police station and make a report you need to make a statement and make allegations against the individual who is in fact committing these acts of cruelty against animals because in many cases you may see a dog tied up but you don't know who is the owner of that dog or what they may have done to that dog and so it does require participation from witnesses to come in and give statements but certainly it is in the law. Animal cruelty is in the law and there are penalties for it."

The family today filed a report with the professional standards branch against personnel in the Gi3.

The Officer in charge of th Eastern Division and the second in command o the GI-3 went to her home to speak with her - and to assure her that they will deal with the discipline of the officers. The cop that was bitten was reportedly taken to the hospital for treatment.
