Tonight, 33-year-old Yu Huan Yang, a businessman from Vernon Street, is at the Belize Central Prison. That's after he was taken to court for allegedly assaulting a man with a metal pipe and firing a weapon at him.

His accuser, a warehouse assistant, reported to police that on Wednesday morning, he was at work at Nando's Wholesale Warehouse, at mile 1 and a half on the George Price Highway. While he was going about his duties, he saw a Chinese man walking toward him with a metal pipe.

He says the Chinese man attacked him for no apparent reason and attempted to club him over the head with the pipe. He raised his arm in time to block the hit, but his assailant kept swinging at him. The complainant then dashed away into the warehouse, and that's when he heard the sound of a gunshot behind him. He turned around and allegedly spotted his assailant with a firearm in hand, who then fired another shot at him, which missed. The complainant then ran away, flagged down a taxi, and went to the nearest police station to report the incident.

Investigators found an expended 9-millimeter shell and a galvanized metal pipe at the scene. They also retrieved surveillance footage from the warehouse.

They later arrested and charged Yang for aggravated assault and wounding. He was arraigned late this evening, and due to the nature of the offenses, he was denied bail.

The presiding magistrate remanded him to the Belize Central Prison until December 20, 2022, his next court date.
