They were all charged for different murders, but three men who took guilty pleas for the lesser charge of manslaughter were sentenced today.
30 year old Kashief Gallego, who killed Jermaine Franklin in Teddy's DVD store in 2017, got 30 years less 10 years for making a guilty plea, which left him with a 20 year sentence. Justice Lamb told him him he must serve 15 years before he is eligible for parole. But he's already spent 5 years plus on remand, so he he's left Gallego with 9 years six months before he can apply for parole.
In a caution statement given by Gallego to police, the day after the murder, on June 22, 2017, he told police, "Yesterday, I saw him at Teddy's and I took it personal. There was no one behind the motive, it was personal between me and him."
The second person to be sentenced today was Marcial Toledo. He's the man who in 2017 found out his wife was having an affair with a police officer, and then went to the cop's job site at the Racoon Street Police Station and fatally stabbed him 5 times.
He was also sentenced to 30 years for his manslaughter plea. Justice Lamb noted that taking the life of another man, a family man, and a law enforcement officer, cannot be encouraged and she must also send a strong message to those who are thinking of doing the same.
And while Toledo's mental state had to be evaluated, she noted that he accepted responsibility for his actions; seemed to be remorseful and he has no previous convictions, so she also took 10 years off his sentence, which left him with 20 years. He also is not eligible for parole until serving 15 years, which, after subtracting his 5 years on remand, leaves him with 9 years plus before he is eligible for parole.
And finally, 27-year-old Evyn Ardon, who in 2018 killed Manuel Canales and pleaded guilty to manslaughter, the lesser charge, was also sentenced. Justice Lamb sentence him to 14 years imprisonment. He and Canales were friends and co workers, but they were out drinking at a Bar in the Ladyville area when they got into a fight which ended in Ardon stabbing Canales to death.
Justice Lamb that she believe he was remorseful for his action which took the life of his friend and a co-worker. She noted also that he gave the police a caution statement where he admitted that he pulled out a knife and stabbed Canales.
For his guilty plea, Ardon who was sentenced to 14 years, from which 6 years were deducted for his early guilty plea, leaving him with 9 years. With a further deduction of his remand time, and the fact that he has young children, Ardon was left with 2 years 3 months and 27 days left behind bars for the crime.
