A cop who broke a glass door at the immigration office has been found guilty.
In June of 2020, 33 year old James Usher was doing police work when he was rebuffed at the Immigration department while trying to make an arrest on someone inside for an SOE violation.
He tried to open the locked door and smashed it in the process. He claims it was an accident - but reports suggest it may have been deliberate.
Today, the Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser found him guilty of damage to property. She told him that in her view from the evidence presented to her, she believed he was reckless. In his mitigation plea - delivered after he fired his attorney right there in court - Usher said he was simply carrying out his duties as a police officer and asked for leniency.
With that the Chief Magistrate fined him $605 dollars and also ordered him to pay compensation in the sum of $466.88 to the Immigration & Nationality Department.
Usher has 21 days to appeal the case which he has indicated he will be doing. Usher had as many as 3 attorneys before his case concluded.
