And at the end of our chat, Elrington was sure to bring us back down to earth reminding us that while Belizeans kick up a fuss about potential immigrants they aren't exactly beating down our borders to come here.
Wilfred Elrington, Former Minister Of Foreign Affairs
"Most people don't want to stay in Belize a lot of Belizeans have a fanciful idea about our country and how people want to be here, not the truth. Not even the Chinese who come here want to stay. They come, and they stay long enough to get a visa to go to the United States, so most people are not dying to come to Belize but if we can get Haitians to come and to work and to be as productive as the Central Americans or as the Mennonites, it's a win-win situation."
And while Elrington opined that Belizeans shouldn't be threatened by Khan, he did wonder whether Khan had cause to worry within Belize, that old enemies may show up to take their revenge. Either way, the Minister says he doesn't expect Belizeans to be affected.
Elrington was foreign Minister for almost 13 years.
