Tonight Majid Khan, former Al-Qaeda terrorist and newly resettled resident of Belize has spent all of 5 days in his new home.
It's an adjustment surely, for a man who's spent the last 20 years in US back sites and Guantanamo Bay.
And while Khan was approved for resettlement and allowed into Belize by Foreign Minister Eamon Courtenay, we wondered what a former Foreign Minister might have done if presented with the same request by the U.S. State Department.
This afternoon we put that question to former Minister Sedi Elrington and here's his opinion on Majid Khan:
Wilfred Elrington, Former Minister Of Foreign Affairs
"I have been listening to the comments being made by different people, I do not agree with the alarmist attitude that is being taken by Belizeans on the matter both the ordinary Belizean and those who are in leadership positions, Belize doesn't have any reputation for having harmed or hurt anybody, nationally or internationally and therefore Belize has no fear or ought not to have any fear that anybody would want to harm the country or it's citizens, you know. My own view is that the time when we ought to have been afraid would have been the time when we brought in thousands of Salvadorians to settle in the. Country, because that was a time when war was going on and these people were coming out of conflict and clearly there would have been people among them who were militant and who may have committed gross infractions of the law in thier country during the war and they may have brought that to us here, also to the fact that this is the, the most murderous area on earth, this Central American area, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, very murderous and a lot of those people have been coming historically, and continue to come to Belize but they don't carry on with that kind of behavior in Belize most people in Belize are law abiding so it is not my view that bringing one man who is allegedly a terrorist and we have to emphasize the allegedly I can't see how that would harm the people and country of Belize in general."
