But how did Kyle Latchman, a born American citizen, end up charged for being the member of a gang in Belize?
His mom says he loved Belize so much that he stayed, stayed and ended up mixed up with the wrong crowd.
Here's what she told us about the moment she knew things had gone irreversibly wrong for her son.
Shannon Latchman, Kyle Latchman's Mom
"Prior to this, my son wound up with the George street young men them and he was charged with gang affiliation and all the other stuff you know, anyhow, so he, he is known with some officers, you understand. So, as anything would happen my daughter-in-law would say mom they have them for 24 hours again or stuff like that and I'm like ok cool no problem but that was not the call this time. She was like ma, Kyle is gone and when he left I wanted to know what was going on and Kyle didn't come back or whatever, and she was like well we will wait until morning and I was like yeah man you know. Because it was too late for you all to even be stressing me out, you know, alright so morning came and no Kyle and so she went to go make the report but as an adult, it has to be like 72 hours or more before you can actually put it out there and that it."
We'll have more from our interview with Kyle Latchman's mother later in the week as group searches for his remains continue. Anyone with information surrounding his disappearance or the whereabouts of his possible remains is asked to call their nearest police station or send a tip to the P3 app.
