And another police officer with a few allegations against him is 39-year-old Corporal Elmer Nah. Today he was back in court along with his wife, Epiphania Caliz and her brother, PC Manuel Caliz. Back in November 2021 when they were first arrested, cops found over 100 live rounds of ammunition, and they were charged with two counts of kept unlicensed ammunition.
And inside the courtroom today, Nah was the first to take the stand to give his version of the events. Attorney Dickie Bradley, who represents Epiphania Caliz, told us what transpired.
Dickie Bradley, Ephephania Caliz Attorney
"In the case of my client, he is a public officer and has been on half pay from November of 2021 to the present, (and that fact is)that in fact, she was with a very small child and her common law, and the bullet proof vest was found in the back of the vehicle. In any case that involves a person having drugs, guns ammunition, customs goods which are not paid for in terms of taxes, you would at least have to establish in a court that the person had control of the team, and also had knowledge of the item."

"Now, interestingly, and importantly, a former Corporal of Police, well he is still a corporal of police, Mr. Elmer Nah took the witness stand. And, he, well I guess he has the experience, so he was a very credible witness, clear and straightforward in his explanation, not only of what actually transpired, but important issues surrounding that matter. So you would have heard the prosecutor or a colleague Alifah Elrington say in one of her questions, so you didn't have a license for the ammunition, and and he didn't hesitate to say "no," because he, is in fact, on a police operation and he belonged to a very special team. And other police officers in other forums, or forahave said that is the procedure they are given an amount, a quantity, especially if you're a team leader, you are then responsible for then redistributing: you 20, you get 50, you will depending on a number of persons in the team…. So these are ammunition that are used by the police in these operations."
When Nah's wife took the stand, she explained that she had no knowledge of any of the ammunition and that she did not understand the charge levied on her.
Nah was kept in remand at the prison, while the Caliz siblings remain on bail. Their next court date is set for April 24th.
