And while that cop is on trial for sexual assault, another is now awaiting his verdict for an accusation of rape. Former police constable Luke Moriera is accused of raping a female detainee in 2015.
The victim, a 25 year old mother of 2, courageously told her story to us at the time saying she was taken from her cell early on the morning of December 20th, handcuffed and taken into a dark room where a police officer raped her. Moreira gave a statement from the dock in which he denied that he committed the offence.
Defence attorney Leeroy Banner said that the woman did not report that Moreira raped her until after she went on national television with the allegation. After she heard closing arguments from Banner and Crown Counsel Jackie Willoughby, Justice Antonette Moore set June first as the date when she will give her verdict for Moriera.
