And a former police constable was also in court today for sentencing after he was convicted of raping a child. Forty-three year old Cyril Casimiro was sentenced to 15 years by Justice Antonette Moore. Before he was sentenced, Casimiro said that he was sorry for what he did and he asked for leniency. He also said that he worked as a police officer for 19 years.

Justice Moore told him that as a police officer he should have known what the repercussions would have been. She said that it was a brutal crime because the child, who was 14 years old at the time, had to get surgery for her injury and although she is now an adult, she is still traumatized by what had happened to her.

At the trial, Casimiro testified and denied that he committed the offence. But he was found guilty in a verdict that was given on March 14.

The incident occurred in April, 2015, in Corozal. The child testified in closed court that while Casimiro was dressed in his uniform and was riding a police motorcycle, he offered her a ride to take her home. But instead of taking her home, Casimiro took her to a deserted beach area on Consejo Road and raped her.

Casimiro was represented in court by attorney Oscar Selgado. Crown Counsel Javier Chan represented the Crown.
