This morning, news broke of seven Mexican sicarios - or narco hitmen - who were caught in Belize. A Mexican online news outlet named "Informativo Chetumal" says the men are members of the Caborca cartel were arrested in Corozal.
The report says they came across to Belize to execute a well known drug figure in the Corozal District. The Commissioner of police has confirmed that the men are detained - but this morning he didn't go so far as to call them sicarios. He said they were stopped at a checkpoint and claim to be road consultants:
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

"Yesterday the police were on operations within the northern districts, particularly Corozal when their attention was drawn to a group of Mexican persons. Those persons were detained by the police and taken to the Corozal Police Station, where they were interviewed and later transported from Corozal to another police station in the country, I'm not going to disclose which station they currently are at because you would know again, that may pose some threat to the police officers working within that particular station, but again for their personal safety and the safety of the police officers, we moved them to an undisclosed location at this time, where they're currently being interviewed. We have seen a number of information coming out of the Mexican press involving these individuals and I can assure you that we are working tirelessly to try and confirm or deny these information but again we remain vigilant along our northern borders as we continue to have incursions with Mexicans and likewise the influences that the Mexican cartels may have on our locals within the northern districts."
Jules Vasquez:
"Sir, is it a fact that they came here to do a hit on a well known drug personality in the north?"
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"Well, what they are saying right now is that they are involved in some road consultancy with the, I think the project that is being run by UNDP, along with national traffic. They alleged that they own a construction company and are engaged in road consultancy. Those information we are yet to confirm. I don't want to go ahead of myself to say things that we will not be able to substantiate later on so I will just end it by saying the information coming out of the press in Chetumal is something we're looking at to ascertain if in fact they came for a particular individual and if either of them were recently involved in a shooting in Mexico, and finally to see if they are members of the Coborca Cartels that operates in the Quintana Roo area, Mexico."
So far, no charges have been brought.
"Informativo Chetumal" CLAIMS that the men have false passports used to facilitate their entrance into Belize to carry out the hit - which was allegedly to take over turf from a Corozal based drug boss.
