A fatal accident at the Santander sugar Farm in the Cayo District on Saturday night claimed the life of a Nicaraguan Welder when he was crushed by a 40 ft long steel cage. He has since been identified as 53 year old Anastacio Vasquez.

According to his colleagues they were working in the area under a steel cage attempting to fix a tire by jacking up the cage. Vasquez had moved away from the cage to retrieve a tool and when he was walking back, one of his colleagues noticed that the cage began falling on its side. He shouted at Vasquez but it was too late and the cage fell on top of him.

When the workers managed to remove it with the help of a crane, Vasquez had died upon impact and was lying face down with multiple bruises and injuries to his back and chest area. His body was taken to the Western Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
