The year is at an end but police are still taking guns off the street. Yesterday, they discovered rifles, ammunition and bulletproof vests in a mangrove area in Belize City. That brings the department's annual count of guns confiscated to 224. ASP Stacy Smith gave us more stats today via Zoom.

"An intelligence led operation carried out by police of the Special Branch and Officers of Precinct two Eastern Division resulted in the discovery of an AR-15 rifle, 105 5.56 rounds of ammunition, two drum magazines, 7.45 rounds of ammunition and two bullet proof vests. These items were found after a search in a mangrove area off Nutmeg Street in the Lake Independence area of Belize City. These items were seized and labeled as found property. The recovery of these items places the total amount of firearms that were seized by the Belize Police Department for 2025 at 224 and the amount of ammunition 7,477. Additionally, a totally of 194 persons were arrested and charged during this period under review for offenses relating to firearm and ammunition. 9mm pistols accounted for 123 of those seized firearms and 14 were high powered rifles with the remaining being different calibers such as.38 or shotguns. As it relates to drugs, 705,638 grams of cannabis were seized. 41,784 grams of cocaine, over 5,000 grams of crack cocaine were all seized for the period under review and a total of 1,562 persons were charged for drug related offenses."
