Hopkins police are investigating an apparent double suicide which occurred in the Village. Two Americans from Texas, a mother and son, 72 year old Barbara Masters and 48 year old William Moore, appear to have taken their own lives inside the house - both by hanging. Police found no signs of forced entry or that there had been a struggle. Additionally, the mother son duo had told a friend last week that they planned to do so. A note was left behind for a male villager who they left their few assets to.
The mother and son were reportedly drug and alcohol abusers and the home was littered with bottles of extra strong rum.
They had moved to Belize some 5 years ago but eventually ran out of money and sold off their assets - according to reports. At the time of their passing, the house did not have electricity. Police continue to investigate. The Ministry of Health and Wellness urges anyone in need of assistance with suicidal thoughts to call 880 2325.
