An employee of the Ministry of Rural Transformation has been charged with theft. He is accused of stealing $15,315.50 from the Crooked Tree Water Board.
He is 40 year old Nemencio Acosta, a resident of Corozal town.
Acosta appeared unrepresented in court this afternoon before senior magistrate Mannon Denison and was read a single charge of theft. No plea was taken and he was bailed for $5,000 dollars.
The complaint was made by Paul Eck, the Chairman of Crooked Tree. He alleged that in 2022 Acosta collected money from him to acquire water meters for the village through private sources and then delivered 45 of them - which the Chairman later found out was a donation to the ministry.
