In 2019 the Belize City council leased a portion of the road reserve in front of Ethel Thompson's property on Coney Drive to one Mary Flowers. After, Flowers opened a restaurant known as Gwen's Kitchen #2. Thompson was never informed nor consulted and that prompted her to take the matter to court and last week, the court ruled that the lease was invalid and awarded damages against the city council. These were for breaching Thompson's right to protection of the law and right not to be arbitrarily deprived of her property. Thompson's attorney, Magali Marin Young explained more via Zoom.
