Two police officers have been found guilty of manslaughter for administering the injuries that caused the death of a man in custody.
In 2023, a video emerged capturing 25-year-old Andrew McDougal being aggressively detained by police in front of a restaurant in Santa Cruz Village. But then 17 days later, McDougal died from internal bleeding due to injuries he sustained while being detained by police. McDougal suffered from hemophilia, a type of genetic bleeding disorder that prevented him from healing.
The two arresting officers, John Lucas and Jaleel Lewis, were later charged for manslaughter, and today both cops were found guilty by Justice Antoinette Moore. The officers were represented in court by attorneys Audrey Matura and Hurl Hamilton, and their sentencing has been set for August 11th.
