Under the theme: "biodiversity, our food supply depends on in it", Belize and countries around the world celebrated world food day today. The day is held in observance of the availability of food and lack of it in countries around the world. Organizer of the event, Melanio Pech, says that while in Belize we are fortunate that there is not a scarcity of food resources, we need to be mindful of the constant threat of shortage:
Melanio Pech – Organizer
"We are celebrating and commemorating world food day which is a day put aside by the food and agriculture organization of the United Nations to sensitize the people, the public on a whole about food. Over 840 million people in the world are going hungry. In belize we are not that bad we are producing a diversity of food and we are not that bad as compared to our Central American neighbors. However we need to make this message go across our country so our producers continue to produce and do a good job to feed our people in Belize."
The observance of world food day began in 1980.
