And the Pirates of the Caribbean controversy will be one of the topics discussed when more than 300 Garinagu from around Belize meet in Libertad Village over the weekend for their annual national convention. Cayetano who is president of the Belize City Branch says land will also be high on the agenda.
Sebastian Cayetano, President Belize District NGC
"Family values, health issues, opportunities for tourism in Belize, Garifuna spirituality, Garifuna healing practices, Caribbean Single Market and Economy's impact on the Belizean economy, and the land situation in our Garifuna communities. There is a very serious land situation especially in Hopkins and Seine Bight Villages. The villages cannot expand neither northward nor southward so the only expansion is either into the sea or into the lagoon. Its very unfortunate because all the other areas have been taken up for tourist purpose we are told."
The convention begins tonight and ends on Sunday.
