Today the Reporter Press in collaboration with the Center for Human Rights Studies held a one day seminar in which representatives from various media houses, human rights activists and representation from the Belize Broadcasting Authority gathered to discuss human rights as it relates to the media. The Reporter's Lisbeth Ayuso says the meeting is highlighting the role of the media in defending the rights of freedom to access information.

Lisbeth Ayuso, Reporter Press
"Today is worldwide freedom of expression day and to celebrate that day the Human Rights Center, the one located in Belmopan, decided that they were going to explore the topic and they wanted to invite the media and the Reporter joined up with them in an effort to bring about what is expression. We wanted to explore the topic and we wanted to find out whether it exists in Belize and under what conditions. So what we did is we set up a panel and we are having discussions today with the media and other people who are also interested in expressing themselves. For example we invited people from the unions, students, the different sectors, NGOs, and different sectors of societies that are interested in having freedom of expression being practiced here in Belize. So that is the reason why we're having this seminar."

The seminar ended this afternoon with a presentation by human rights activist Dr. Eduardo Bertoni.
