The September celebrations kick off on August 31st with a ceremony in the Bliss Center parking lot. The full calendar of events for the celebrations was unveiled this morning at a press conference held at the House of Culture. We'll highlight some of the activities shortly but first, at this morning's ceremony - Belize City Mayor Zenaida Moya announced the theme for this year's 26th independence anniversary. 89 themes were submitted but only one was chosen.
Zenaida Moya, September Celebrations Committee
"Ladies and gentlemen it gives me great privilege to tell you the one which it is. The words which will grace the flyers and posters this year and which will go down in history as theme for 2007 is 'Independence, Strong and Free. Belize Fi All Ah We.'"
The theme was submitted by 14-year-old Esther Usher, a high school student. She won $1,000 in addition to a gift bag from the Belize Tourism Board.
