Monday is Garifuna Settlement Day and today celebrations started early at Anglican Cathedral College. It was the school’s annual cultural day, which is a celebration of all cultures – Mestizos, Maya, Creole, Asian, and of course Garifuna. Chairman of the school’s cultural awareness day is Juan Moguel.
Juan Moguel, ACC
“Its for broadening and appreciating the cultures that we have in Belize and most importantly for our students to make sure that our tradition is being passed from one generation to the other. We have been noticing that our traditions, our culture, have been diminishing year after year and its sort of encouragement to our students to keep our tradition alive. They have been long awaiting this cultural day awareness. Yes they’ve been preparing so difficult; getting their materials, their displays, and they were very very into it.”
And not only costumes and exhibits, the day also featured cultural dances.
