On Saturday six mothers, grandmothers and even great grandmothers will entertain at the city centre as the annual Miss Y takes centre stage. It’s the YWCA’s biggest and most popular fundraiser, and today 7NEWS caught up with the 2008 contestants as they were busy rehearsing for their presentation tomorrow night.

Birdie Francis, Choreographer - Miss Y
“This year I think you should expect a new opening number, a different opening from a different time. Last year we did the twist, saluting the twist and all the stuff that you did in the sixties. This year we are gong to salute the roaring twenties so they are doing the Charleston, so I think that should be fun. You know go back some so it is a little bit different. Our theme is love, every year we have a different theme so the seniors, the seenagers can give a different message to the younger people in our audience and so this year it is love.

Everything that we are doing will be about love. The message that we give forth will be about love, the music that they will be doing their formal wear on speaks of love. We want to stop the violence and share the love.

We have six contestants and they come from all over and we have even from Hattieville, Ladyville, Port Loyola, Collet division. We have from all over the place.

Our youngest is sixty, our eldest is seventy nine and we have one contestant that is hearing impaired and we have had one that has had two strokes so I think that these ladies should be applauded for coming out and helping the Y like this.”

On that night the Young Women Christian Association hopes to collect forty thousand dollars. The proceeds raised from the event will be used fund the programmes at the Y. The six contestants vying for the title are Irene Vernon–Novelo, Hilary Chricton, Rosenell Gough, Joyce Flowers, Adelia Young and Moren Baptist. The event is scheduled for seven thirty, on Saturday night at the City Centre.
