They may come from different ethnic backgrounds but are alike in so many other ways. Belizean artist Rachel Heusner Superville and Taiwanese artist Yaoling Lee are both dedicated mothers who also share a love for painting. The women who are working in water color oil and acrylic for the first time have combined their talents in tribute to all mothers. 7NEWS caught up with Rachel and Yaoling at the Belize House of Culture where the women will display some of their remarkable pieces for the next two weeks.

Yaoling Lee, Artist
“I wanted to do something really new. Something really pure about Belize is the landscaping and those are really beautiful when you see the sea, the sky, and not much buildings but it is nice when you can feel the air and the temperature.

Well actually my major was sculpture but sculpture relates to everything, to drawings, paintings, and I use oil material as my media. Sometimes people ask me will I do oil painting or water painting or ink and I said those are material – I use them to do my artwork.”

“Because the economy is tight, a lot of people are not putting out money to purchase art and as painters that is how you survive; you need to sell your paintings. So I think it is important that the society, you can’t force it because the whole world is kind of on an economic shift right now so we just have to continue practicing our craft, enjoying it and maybe doing whatever else it takes to survive.

I have a number of black and white pieces. They depict life, everyday things that we see around us; houses, flowers, people in their natural setting, and I think it is an enjoyable show.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
It is paintings you’ve done here in Belize since coming back home?

Rachel Heusner Superville
“The majority. There are one or two pieces that I pulled from before that I never got to show and I think it is important to show them as well.”

Rachel and Yaoling exhibition and sale officially opened this evening at the Belize House of Culture.
