The National Emergency Management Organization estimates that Tropical Storm Arthur will cost Belize $77 million in damage and losses, and another $45 million in repairs. In Belize City the City Emergency Management Organization says Arthur’s fury is responsible for $200,000 in damages. Most of that was done to homes -where roofs were blown off, which is where a donation from the Anglican Diocese will come in. It is for $8,700 and it will go to 13 affected families. This afternoon Anglican Bishop Phillip Wright handed over the check to CEMO Coordinator Phillip Willoughby.
Bishop Phillip Wright, Anglican Church
“We have done some work south but then we realized there were families here in Belize City itself and the environment that were affected and so that is how this came about and we decided to reach out to help some of these families.”
Keith Swift,
Why did the church reach out to assist?
Bishop Phillip Wright,
“Well to tell you the truth Keith, besides preaching the gospel we are here to make a difference in people’s lives – not just spiritually but physically as well.”
Phillip Willoughby, Director – CEMO
“The donation coming from the Anglican Diocese will be going to thirteen deserving houses, homes that were affected by the system. But again these thirteen families, the damages incurred are under $1,000 as per the damage assessment report that was produced by the Belize City Council’s Emergency Management Committee. These funds will be accounted to NEMO and they will then disburse it back.”
In addition to this donation, on Saturday Bishop Wright travelled to Hope Creek with relief supplies. A team from St. John’s Cathedral visited Gales Point today with relief supplies.
