Shakespeare said, “the play’s the thing” but one new drama presentation which will premiere this weekend at the Bliss Centre disproves that. It’s called “Me and Mi Genie,” a comedy written by Jamaican playwright Patrick Brown. But more than just fun, it’s fund raising for Rotary’s Gift of Life Programme. We found out where a good cause meets a bellyful of laughs.
Jamie Thompson,
“This year’s play is called me and mi genie. It is a play about

some slaves on a plantation in 1938 and of course all slaves are always fighting to be free and this time one of the slaves comes across a lantern which produces a genie and as usual you know when you have a genie you get three wishes and so the play is built around wishing on these three wishes and the other slaves are trying to persuade the main character to wish for freedom and the other character has his own thing that he wants to do with this wish. If you want to know the rest, you have to come out to the show to find out how it all turns out.”
Ellison Flowers, Rotary Club President
“The focus really of Rotary is to promote things like the Gift of Life Program where we send children with congenital heart diseases to the states for heart attention. If you use last year as an example, we sent 14 kids who certainly would not have extended their lives if they didn’t get that surgery.”
The play runs from Friday eighth August to the tenth at the Bliss Center.
