The early rains made for dangerous conditions on the Western Highway this morning. At around 8:30, this Toyota Hilux pickup truck was traveling from Belize City to Belmopan when it flipped violently at mile 21 near the Gracie Rock cutoff. Those at the scene say the pickup actually somersaulted, as it tumbled off the road. It is assigned to the Department of the Environment and three persons were inside. Remarkably, none of them were seriously hurt and all walked away

from the accident. They did go for a checkup and the driver Jevon Hulse received a minor injury to the hip.

That stretch of road near mile 21 and extending right up to mile 25 is known to be particularly slippery when wet. It has witnessed some of the most deadly accidents recorded in the past few years.

Further down the Western Highway at mile 4, just before the Burton Creek Bridge a lo-boy hauling trailer carrying a 50 ton spool of industrial electrical cable toppled over as it turned into a dirt road. The shoulder was soft due to the rains and the weight of the truck made it top heavy and it tilted unto its side. Getting it righted is no mean feat because of the weight which is over 100,000 pounds. The spool is wound with a submarine cable which BEL will lay underwater for a special project in San Pedro. It was being transported to a special concrete berthing dock which can withstand the weight.
