All of last week we showed you carnival mas camps which made it clear that the September spirit is robust. And while the streets had the energy from well in advance, officialdom gave its nod on Friday night to let the festivities begin. Mayor Zenaida Moya, co-chair of the September Celebrations Committee gave the opening address at the official opening ceremonies.

Zenaida Moya, Co-Chair Sept. Celebrations Committee
“I can feel a sense of unity amongst our people, one which I would want to beg of every Belizean young and old to nurture and grow into the same kind that brought our forefathers together to give us this glorious St. George’s Caye Day to celebrate 210 years later. Our people have suffered but risen to the occasion. Our nation has faced numerous kinds of suppression but continues to progress.”

Adele Ramos, Poet
“The great Phillip Goldson said it right, the time to save Belize is before we lose it. Come decked in your red, white and blue. Don’t talk patriotism, prove it. The line has been drawn in the sand so which side will you be on. This is the battle for Belize and don’t think it will blow over like a breeze for its been 210 years and counting and the warriors of this jewel keep on marching.”
