As we told you earlier, the tenth of September went without incident; thanks to a seriously beefed up police presence. But still, we felt that the crowd in the jump up, which had been resurgent for the past few years, was somewhat diminished. Whether that was for security fears or just too much sun hot it’s hard to say. Here’s a re-cap of that and the rest of yesterday’s activities.

Jules Vasquez Reporting,
Under watch of the massive Belizean flag, the tradition and the lore of the Tenth were intact.

Zenaida Moya, Mayor of Belize City
“The threat of invasion Belize faced in 1798 united the settlers and gave a victory that gives us a great reason to celebrate proudly today.”

Hon. Manuel Heredia, Chairman – September Celebrations Committee
“The battle might have been won but the war is not over. As sons and

daughters of the Baymen we must continue to fight against the tyrants and despots who will try to destroy what was achieved on that fateful day.”

And in a tradition as venerable as those speeches, the new Queen of the Bay was installed.

Ronnie Coye, Outgoing Queen
“With this crown I crown thee Queen of the Bay. With this sceptor I bid these rule the hearts of the bay. With this robe I bid thee warm the hearts of the bay.”

Karima Card, Queen of the Bay
“I Karima Sandra Card accept this crown, robe, and sceptor and will wear them with honor and pride.”

Coye and Card: ‘We wish you a happy Tenth, enjoy your September celebrations.’

And tradition continued in the Parade with the side-stepping horseman, the Grand Marshall and the inheritors of the Baymen’s legacy. And undaunted by the September Grenade scare, UDP politicians were they were visible leading, marching, profiling, playing brass and dancing - encouraging a robust jump up. That had the spirit but certainly not the numbers of last year.
