After a tempestuous hurricane season and a withering summer, for the past few weeks, Belizeans have been enjoying the cool weather especially during the late nights and early mornings - which also mean your next electricity bill may be lower because you have hardly had to use your fan. And to keep warm you probably had to use a blanket or as many as two sheets - but a group of women are offering another alternative to keep your night rest as comfortable as possible. On Saturday you are being asked to stop in at the House of Culture at the Government House on Regent Street where you can find an assortment of hand made quilts on display. 7NEWS stopped by today.
Lena Friessen, Organizer - Women Quilting Exhibition
“It is a job that we love to do so we try to please other people with quilts also. We have different types of quilts, king sized and queen sized and double beds, single beds and baby quilts, cushions, wall hangings from birds and fish or patchwork.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
This looks like a lot of lot of work, how long does it take you women to actually complete a quilt?
Lena Friessen,
“That’s sometimes hard to say because we do our own housework and then we have spare time, that’s where we spend our time in quilts so I don’t know if I can exactly how many hours.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
And the material, the different colors and that make them so attractive, how do you go deciding pattern you are going to do and what colours you are going to use?
Lena Friessen,
“We have some patterns in our books and we also whenever people come and have a look, we sometimes get ideas from what they are looking for.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
Has it been a success?
Lena Friessen,
“Yes we feel it has been a success.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
You get a lot of orders?
Lena Friessen,
“Some years it is better than other years.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
How are things looking this year?
Lena Friessen,
“It is the first day now, maybe Saturdays more people are free to come.”
All items on display are for sale. If you will not be able to afford to purchase especially quilts that can cost as much eight hundred dollars you can place orders by calling Lena Freisen at telephone number 823–0167 or Esther Kornelsen at 823–0017.
