A Caye Caulker fisherwoman of 30 years has been named fisher of the year. This is to commemorate International Fisherman's Day, which is celebrated under the theme, "Better Care for a Better Share."
Maria Allen, who resides on the island, has been assisting her fellow fishers in that community for years, acting as a receiving agent for marine products on behalf of National Fishermen Producers Cooperative Society Limited.
She grew up fishing with her dad and was able to teach her husband and sons the way of the waters. Now her family has a thriving stone crab business where they supply the high - demand delicacy to numerous restaurants throughout Belize.
Allen has also been encouraging women and young people to get into the fishing business, as a way to be self-sustainable and self-accomplished.
Today, she gave an interview to Sidney Fuller, the executive director of the Belize Fishermen Cooperative Association. Here is an excerpt:
Two other persons were also selected as Outstanding Fishers of the Year 2021. The first is Victoria Tun, a Dangriga resident and member of the Wabafu Fisher Association. She has been fishing for over twenty years. The second is Nestor Lopez, of Corozal Town, who is a member of Northern Fishermen Cooperatives, and has been fishing for over 25 years. The Fisher of the year will receive $2,000 cash prizes while the two Outstanding Fishers will receive a combined total of $1,500 in cash and prizes.
